Frozen. Your limbs betray you, resisting your drive to move. Eyes darting, your dulled gaze perceives only a fuzzy picture of your surroundings, and your ears pick up nothing but an oppressive ringing.
A voice pierces through the haze...
//"What're you DOIN' whelp!? DUCK, if you know what's good for ya!"//
[[Duck -> M2]]An arrow whizzes past your ear, wrenching your mind back to the present moment. The shaded woodland shifts back into focus, and your limbs begin to obey you once more.
You drop to your knees, finding cover behind a fallen trunk. A large hand grabs your arm. Turning, you see an older man, bald and bearded. He squats beside you, a bow in his hands. Oskar.
He holds you firmly, staring at you with eyes wide. He speaks to you in a thick, accented voice.

You hear a rustling impact in the leaves to your right. Looking down, you see your sword slide to a halt on the ground next to you. Glancing up, you see a younger, clean shaven man crouched behind a boulder only a few strides away. Janus.
(text-colour:cyan)[''Janus:''] "You dropped this, friend" he says, in a chiding tone.

The thudding against the trunk slowly stops, as the arrows continue to fail to meet flesh. Janus tightens the straps on his shield, gives you a nod, and bolts from behind the boulder, sprinting for the trees. Oskar rises from behind the trunk, and begins firing his own volley into the underbrush.

You grip your sword and abandon the safety of the fallen trunk, running after Janus. More arrows fly your way, but most miss entirely, the rest striking Janus' shield.
Janus breaks into the thicket. You follow him closely behind, leaping over foliage and cutting vines and branches out of your way.
Your eyes quickly find two humanoid reptilian figures standing behind large trees, hiding from Oskar's volley of arrows. The red crystalline spines running down their backs stand on end when they see you, and both quickly grab for blades at their waists.
(text-colour:cyan)[''Janus:''] "That one, friend!" he says, nodding towards one of the Raegodan.
Janus breaks to the left, charging the other Raegodan.

Gripping your blade tight, you run at the other Raegodan. Getting closer, you see a large ring piercing in the side of its head, seemingly made of steel.
It readies its own blade, a makeshift composite of bone and wood. The creature isn't much smaller than you, but meets you with surprising tenacity.
It screams at you once you get close in a foul, guttural tongue. It attacks.

It looks you in the eyes, almost confused. It sputters a few incomprehensible words.
(text-colour:yellow)[''Raegodan:''] "Torkeev...nach...."
The creature drops to the ground. Feeling your heart pounding in your chest, you stop to catch your breath for a moment. Your first real fight, and you bested your opponent.

You take a few more powerful steps towards the creature, yet you do not swing. The creature stares at you for but a moment, before turning and bolting into the woods, holding its wounds.

His face softens when he sees you and Janus, and he lowers his weapon. A big smile rises on his face. He calls to you, loud and expressive.
(text-colour:#ffa100)[''Oskar:''] "Look at these noble warriors! Game 'em reptiles a right lashing, eh? Taught 'em to think twice 'fore pouncing on any old travellers."
You see him notice your fatigue, his wide smile shrinking to a small grin. His eyes dart towards his pack.
(text-colour:#ffa100)[''Oskar:''] "Here, let me grab you two some water."
He sets down his bow and begins rummaging through his pack. He pulls out a couple of waterskins and hands them to you and Janus. Oskar reaches into his pack and pulls out some rations; salt-dried meat and stale bread. You and Janus do the same, resuming the meal you were having before arrows started flying. The food brings little taste to your tongue, but manages to quell your hunger.
You all sit down around your still smoldering fire, regathering yourselves from the fight. You begin to notice the sounds of the forest again. The birds singing, the water of a creek flowing nearby. The sun beams down through breaks in the canopy, and a gentle breeze flows through the branches of the trees. You find the beauty of it all a bit strange; only moments ago you and your companions were fighting for your lives.

After a few agonizing minutes, you hear familiar voices coming your direction. You peek from your hiding spot, and see Oskar and Janus returning from the thicket. They appear unharmed, though Oskar is covered in dark purple blood. They are speaking to each other.

Janus looks out over the forest, eyes thirstily drinking up the view. You are just high enough to see over the canopy. The slowly setting sun casts a beautiful amber glow over the rolling hills of swaying leaves.
Oskar speaks, snapping you and Janus out of the entrancing view.

The three of you slowly descend the other side of the cliff. You approach the path, and Oskar points out the locations of the Raegodan. Three in total, tucked behind trees and boulders in order to be invisible from the bridge. From the other side, their locations are clear as day.
You all inch closer. The Raegodans' hands are not even on their weapons; it is clear that they expect to see their targets coming well in advance. The three of you get as close as is safe, then Oskar signals for you to stop. He points and assigns a Raegodan to each of you, as you slowly and silently draw your blade from its sheath. He gives you the one closest to the bridge.
Oskar gives you an expectant nod. You nod back, and so does Janus, albeit reluctantly. Oskar slowly stands up, then breaks off in a sprint at the closest Raegodan, hollering at the top of his lungs. Janus launches forward right after, running towards the furthest Raegodan, blade in hand.

The fight is over before having even begun. None of your practice duels ever ended like this.

[[Regroup with Oskar and Janus ->M76]]You swing your sword at the Raegodan, taking advantage of your superior reach. It manages to block your attacks with its own blade, but every collision sends shards of bone spewing in all directions. Its tenacity wanes as it starts to backpeddle. [[Regroup with Oskar and Janus ->M76]]You walk back towards Oskar and Janus, exhaustion entering your body as the adrenaline fades. Janus stands over the unconscious Raegodan. It seems slightly larger than the others, with a large uncut gem dangling from a piercing in its snout. Oskar walks over, wiping purple blood off of his blade.
Oskar looks to you.

(text-colour:cyan)[''Janus:''] "Exactly, Oskar! They're desperate! We don't owe them our supplies, but surely you've been in their position of desperation when you were at war. The sounds of frogs and crickets seem cacophonous in the absence of any conversation. You find both Oskar and Janus glancing at each other frequently while setting up the tent covering and rolling out their bed rolls.
After setting camp, you all settle down to eat more of the same tasteless rations you've been sustaining on the last few days; you don't dare to make a fire.
The discomforting silence continues. Neither Oskar, nor Janus make any attempt to break it.

The silence continues as you all slowly eat your food. The tension from earlier slowly dissipates, and you begin to find actual calm. After another few minutes, Oskar speaks up, breaking the silence.
(text-colour:#ffa100)[''Oskar:''] "Right, lads. We'd best be turning in. This old man needs his beauty sleep."
(text-colour:cyan)[''Janus:''] "You're right, we should go to sleep. One more day of travel tomorrow."
The three of you all lie down on your bed rolls, the night sounds of the forest taking over. A gentle rain begins, pattering against the tent cover, and the ground in front of the groove. Moments after lying down, you feel the exertion of the day's travel seep into your body. Your feet and legs ache, and your mind wanders to the challenges of the day, and the decisions that you have made.
(if:$KilledSecondRaegodan is true)[[[Sleep ->M83]]]
(if:$KilledSecondRaegodan is false)[[[Sleep ->M84]]]You close your eyes, and let sleep take you. You find your mind replaying the day's events in dreams; the Raegodan, the bridge, the arguments.
You feel a hand on your mouth. You quickly awaken, leaving your dreams behind and returning to reality. Your eyes open to the sight of Janus above you, his hand on your mouth, and a finger in front of his face, signalling for you to be quiet.
Once Janus sees you understand, he removes his hand from your mouth, and allows you to get up. You see Oskar awake as well, trying to silently restring his bow, looking out into the trees for any sign of movement. Janus quietly draws his sword, and signals for you to do so as well. You cannot see whatever Oskar and Janus have noticed, but you hear what sounds like footsteps in the foliage nearby.
Oskar finishes restringing the bow, and signals for you and Janus to come close. He opens his mouth to speak, but stops himself and points out to the trees. Following the direction, you see bits of sparkling red among the darkness, reflecting the moonlight.
Oskar whispers.
(text-colour:#ffa100)[''Oskar:''] "Spinebacks. Can't tell how many. We've got seconds 'fore they notice us, I'll shoot one, then we charge. Understand?"
Janus' pauses, but then nods in agreement. Oskar knocks an arrow, and draws back. You tighten your grip on your blade and prepare to charge. The footsteps get closer, the specks of reflective red grow in number, and you begin to make out shapes in the forest. Large shapes.
You hear Oskar exhale, and then release the arrow. It shoots into the trees, connecting with a punctual thud. You hear a sharp yelp from the trees, followed by an erupting roar.
//"KashNIKALAA!!!"//
The shadowy shapes begin barrelling in your direction. Janus launches forward to meet them, and you follow close behind. Behind you, you see Oskar drop his bow and draw his sword, following behind.
As the shapes emerge from the trees, you see three large Raegodan, much larger than the others you've fought today. They all carry iron blades. Rusted, but still deadly. With them is another, smaller Raegodan, wielding a bone blade. They charge towards you with brutal ferocity, weapons raised.

You sit up, and see Janus rolling up his bedroll. Oskar is chewing on dried meat, cursing to himself under his breath as he tries to collapse down the tent covering.
You slowly rise, and get to work helping them break camp. After a few days of working together, the work goes by easy.
As you finish, you notice a big grin on Oskar's face.

The three large Raegodan engage Oskar and Janus. They don't seem at all surprised to find you here.
The smaller one closes in on you. You notice a familiar gem dangling from the creature's snout. The one you left behind at the bridge, returned.
Unlike the others that you have fought, this one wastes no time and goes on a brutal offensive, swinging at you with fury, and screaming incoherently.
[[Parry the creature's attacks ->M86]]

It swings at you with its other hand, the clawed fist raking across your face and forcing you back. You feel blood seeping from your forehead. You steel yourself against the pain, and advance on the Raegodan once more. Janus closes in on it from the other side, careful and methodical. In unison, you bare down on the creature with a flurry of attacks.
It grunts in exertion, managing to block or dodge most of the attacks. The combined assault of two blades is too much for the creature, however. Your blade begins to meet flesh, as does Janus'. With every subsequent cut, the creature yelps in pain, slowing down.
The Raegodan roars, and takes one last desperate swing against you. It nearly cleaves off your arm, but the attack is slow, and leaves its back fully exposed. Janus rummages through his pack for a trowel, and starts looking for a good place to start digging.

When the hole is finally deep enough, you and Janus pick up Oskar's body and gently lower it into the earth. The work of covering him up goes quicker.
Finally finished, the two of you begin to break camp in silence. You struggle to process the event. Oskar is gone. Raegodan bodies litter the floor. The air reeks of death.
With nothing else to do, you finish breaking camp and follow Janus back towards the main trail.

The three of you begin hiking up the cliff. The climb is slow, with several small cutbacks. Oskar continuously complains about his knees, though Janus seems eager to get closer to the top.
After another few minutes, the three of you wrap around to the other side of the cliff, standing on a small ridge that overlooks the stone bride that connects the main path on either side of the Loreth River.
Janus looks out over the forest, eyes thirstily drinking up the view. You are just high enough to see over the canopy. The slowly setting sun casts a beautiful amber glow over the rolling hills of swaying leaves.
Oskar speaks, snapping you and Janus out of the entrancing view.
(text-colour:#ffa100)[''Oskar:''] "Look."

Looking to the source of the cry, you see a smaller Raegodan walking your direction. The moonlight begins to illuminate the creature's form as it gets closer to you. Across its torso are blood-stained violet bandages, and a piercing of ringed steel sits embedded in the side of its head.

The woods thin, the trees becoming more sparce with every mile. Eventually, the woods give way altogether to sprawling, verdant plains. Off in the distance, you see wheat fields and farmhouses. A mountain range edges the horizon, and nestled in its foothills you see a large town. Veradain.

You hear nothing out of the ordinary, but as you get closer, the dark spots become clearer; blood on the dirt road, red and purple alike. The bits of bone are makeshift Raegodan blades.
You follow the blood a few strides off the side of the path before you see him. Janus, lied on his back among the foliage. Dark red stains his chest, and you can see a large hole in the boiled leather. His face is covered in dried blood from a blow to the head, and there are small cuts and scrapes across his arms. His eyes stare up into the gorgeous canopy, lifeless.

The hours of walking blend together, and you begin to notice the whispers of sunlight beginning to seep into the forest. Despite the rising sun, you can't get the image of Janus out of your mind. Those dead eyes...
You look to Oskar occasionally, who marches slowly, yet steadily. The two of you do not speak.
The woods thin, the trees becoming more sparse with every mile. Eventually, the woods give way altogether to sprawling, verdant plains. Off in the distance, you see wheat fields and farmhouses. A mountain range edges the horizon, and nestled in its foothills you see a large town. Veradain.
Oskar finally speaks.
(text-colour:#ffa100)[''Oskar:''] "Winds, the sun feels good. Wish Janus had gotten to see it again. This is the kind of view he'd have loved."
He pauses, then turns to you. He looks sickly, the color draining from him more and more.

The two of you stand in silence for another moment.
He opens his mouth to speak again, but says nothing. Instead, he begins the final march through the plains, back to civilization. You follow close behind, eager to put this whole experience behind you.
[[Finish ->M110]]He barks a response at you.
(text-colour:#ffa100)[''Oskar:''] "Ain't MY violence, lad. I'm just willing to accept what you two are too self-righteous to see."

Janus tries to follow after him, but stops after a few strides.
(text-colour:cyan)[''Janus:''] "He shouldn't be by himself, but we can't do anything more to help. I shouldn't have gotten him in the leg..."
He removes his pack and starts rummaging through it. He grabs a strip of cloth and a waterskin, and gets to work cleaning and bandaging the wound in his thigh.
(text-colour:cyan)[''Janus:''] "We should probably get moving as soon as I'm done here. I don't want to fight any more Raegodan. "

[[Continue on the journey without Oskar->M145]]Progress is slow, and anxious. Janus isn't able to move as quickly as you are with his wound, and both of you are constantly checking your surroundings for any sign of a Raegodan attack.
Dusk finally begins to settle. The sounds of the crickets grows, as less and less sunlight makes it through the canopy.
Janus stops you. His face is pale, his eyes sunken.

After setting camp, you and Oskar settle down to eat more of the same tasteless rations you've been sustaining on the last few days; you don't dare to make a fire.
As you lie down, you begin to hear rustling from the forest, and the sounds of guttural voices. You sit up, alerted. Janus does as well. The two of you look at each other, and stay silent.
The sounds get louder, and then gradually quieter. Over time, they slowly fade out. When the sounds of the crickets are once again the only thing you can hear, the both of you finally relax. You all look at each other, but say nothing.
Finally, Janus drifts off to sleep. It's not long before exhaustion overtakes you as well, and you fall asleep.
[[Sleep->M148]]You close your eyes, and let sleep take you. You find your mind replaying the day's events in dreams; the Raegodan, the bridge, the arguments, the fight. Over and over again, they cycle through your consiousness, until eventually you are awakened by the sunlight.
You sit up, and see Janus already awake, silently breaking camp. He is struggling to carry things with only one good arm. You help him, and before long the two of you are moving once again.

You slowly walk towards the body, crouching down to inspect it. The smell of blood assails your nose, sickening and metallic. It is difficult to tell which of his several wounds spelled his demise, yet you do feel a faint warmth when you touch his skin. The brawl that ended his life took place mere hours ago.
Janus stands nearby, looking at the body. He opens his mouth to speak, but instead doubles over and vomits onto the forest floor. He coughs and groans, steadying himself agains a nearby tree.
After gathering himself, he finally manages to speak, his voice wilted and raspy.
(text-colour:cyan)[''Janus:''] "He's really dead...It was foolish of him to try and travel through the night..."
Janus leans forward and gently closes Oskar's eyes. He looks down, and you see drops of moisture fall from his face onto Oskar's chest. He wipes his eyes, and looks to you. His eyes are wide with a swirl of fear, desperation, and confusion.
(text-colour:cyan)[''Janus:''] "...He was strong...Would he have survived, if I hadn't stabbed him in the thigh earlier? I was just trying to stop more killing, but now he's dead anyway. Friend...is this my fault? I need you to tell me if it was my fault."

You turn away, reflexively. Looking at the body of your former companion, so unceremoniously killed, is too much for you.

Opening it, you see a portrait of a young woman, with frazzled curly hair and a beaming smile. You close the locket and wipe the blood off of it, putting it in your pocket.
